Abstract

This article written in Ilocano language by Mr. Lambino Banisal recounts the history and development of the Maeng tribe of Luba, Tubo, Manabo and some parts in the Ilocos area. It includes the tribe’s origin story, customs and practices; political development during the Spanish and American colonial period, experiences during the Marcos regime; and the development of the parishes in Luba and Tubo.

Mr. Lambino Banisal, from Tiempo, Tubo, is one of the prominent elders of the Maeng tribe. He was an active parishioner, catechist and teacher at Luba-Tubo parish and became the Parish Leaders’ coordinator. His manuscript was based on the oral accounts of Ama Caripas Lumangseg from Beew, Tubo, Ama Alejandrino Banisal from Tiempo, Tubo and Ama Sagmayao from Ataki, Tubo. The recent developments in Luba and Tubo were based on his personal experiences as a respected tribe leader.

According to Ama Malid-ing Rayken and Ama Enriel Agpad
by Pura Sumangil and Elsa Bagioan
undated, 6pp.

Abstract

This article was written by Ms. Pura Sumangil, the Director of AIRC from 2000 to 2004 together with Mrs. Elsa Bagioan, a Tinguian and AIRC research associate. It was a partial write-up of their interview with Ama Malid-ing Rayken and Ama Enriel Agpad, both respected Belwang elders of Dao-angan, Boliney.

The article includes a short account of the migration and experiences of the thirteen men and their family from Belwang, Kalinga (Montanosa) in search for a new settlement area. It also features some customs and practices of the tribe during the olden days.

The Belwangs in Dao-angan, Boliney are a unique group because they are the only Belwang people not only in the municipality of Boliney but in the whole province of Abra. All the rest belong to other ethno-linguistic groups.

Two respected old men: Ama Malid-ing Rayken and Ama Enriel Agpad related the history of the Belwangs in Dao-angan. Rayken, the father of Ama Malid-ing was a member of the hunters’ group from Belwang, Montanosa who traversed rivers and ranges of mountains in search of wild animals like deers, wild pigs, chickens and birds. They reached a certain placed called Dao-angan where cogon abound.

From a Souvenir Program of Ilocos Region Athletic Association (IRAA) Meet
1981, pp176-177.

The 'Usok' in Tangadan is more than just a welcome tunnel. It is a symbol of the Abrenian's hardiness and defiance against odds.

The construction of the tunnel started in 1934, an imperative need to divert the old road which was very steep and difficult to negotiate... More than fifty workers labored for two years, hammering, drilling and blasting their way through solid rocks... The resulting structure was a crude one. The walls were not reinforced so that loose rocks fell when rains came...

The Allied Forces tried to destroy the tunnel twice to impede the advancing Japanese soldiers. However, it did not totally collapsed.

...It was only in 1961 that restoration works started, a feat accomplished through the efforts of former congressman Lucas Paredes who worked for the appropriation of over P200,000.00 for the tunnel's reconstruction and improvement.

NB: The Souvenir Book of the IRAA Meet in 1981 includes a 21-page write-up and photo gallery on the host province - ABRA. No author, writer or researcher was mentioned. The memoir of the Tangadan tunnel was provided by Benito Perlas, an elder residing in Tangadan.

Fr. Domenico Togli Gaoini, SVD
1979, 23pp.

This is the revised and updated manuscript of Fr. Dominic Gaoini, SVD on the Historical Highlights of the Province of Abra(1585-1920) given at Tayum, Abra on April 19, 1979. The first draft only ends with the year 1920. The subject of the updated draft is reverted to the Tinguians of Abra in as much as the historical highlights provide the missionary efforts of the Spanish Augustinians to convert them to the Catholic Faith and reduce their scattered communities into a more 'civilized' rancherias and pueblos. The second draft continues the historical events leading to the year 1979.

NB. The two original drafts available at the Abraeniana Institute are not without errors, particularly on the consistency of dates. The reader-researcher must take full awareness that the some of the data in the drafts lack sufficient documentary evidences.
